The Hollywood Reporter announced on June 15, 2018, that a crypto movie is currently being filmed in New York. The thriller revolves around an anti-money laundering (AML) agent, played by Beau Knapp. The agent investigates fraud and corruption in his hometown of New York. Hollywood actor, Kurt Russell, plays the father of the AML agent. There is also a starring role for The Handmaid’s Tale actress, Alexis Bledel.
The crypto movie will be released as Crypto with worldwide rights represented by Film Mode Entertainment. The AML agent becomes embroiled with a cryptocurrency guru turned cyber sleuth played by Jeremie Harris. Crypto is based on a work of fiction by a financial industry consultant, Jeff Ingber. Ingber is a native New Yorker and has held senior management positions in the financial industry for more than thirty years.
Crypto is being directed by High School director, John Stalberg Jr. Stalberg told The Hollywood Reporter, “Beau is incredibly talented, and seeing him bring this character to life opposite talent like Alexis, Kurt, Luke, Jeremie and Vincent has been a dream come true.” Producer, Jordan Yale Levine, added, “Cryptocurrency has captured the attention and imagination of consumers and entrepreneurs all over the world but has never been explored in film in such a nuanced and exciting way.”
Crypto is not the first crypto movie to be produced, but it’s the first Hollywood production featuring an A-list actor like Kurt Russell. In 2015, Dope was released and included scenes covering the online marketing of drugs for bitcoin. The 2016 Vietnamese film, Bitcoin Heist, features a team of elite hackers planning the ultimate cryptocurrency heist.
Another film believed to be at the pre-production stage is Bitcoin. It features a father, down on his luck after losing his job, trying to convert bitcoin to fiat from an anonymous account. It’s a clear sign that cryptocurrency is becoming more mainstream with Hollywood now getting involved.
