Blockchain for Sustainable Development - UN Event to Focus on Public BenefitsPlans have been made to stage a United Nations event in conjunction with the World Investment Forum 2018 that will look into the benefits of blockchain technology beyond the often-discussed finance sector. The Blockchain for Sustainable Development event takes place on October 24 at the UN’s European headquarters in Geneva.

Impressive lineup of speakers

Finance has long been seen as the hottest sector when it comes to distributed ledger technology, but we’re seeing a shift of emphasis to other types of new and innovative services.

At this early stage the list of speakers for the Blockchain for Sustainable Development event is fairly impressive, and includes the likes of Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, the Founder and CEO of Binance, Louis de Bruin, Blockchain Leader at IBM, Ariana Fowler from Consensys Social Impact, and Galia Benartzi, co-founder of Bancor.

Professor Jem Bendell, who is working alongside others to help organize the Blockchain for Sustainable Development event said –

“This high-level gathering will offer a different level of discussion and networking than found on the crowded blockchain conference circuit.”

“With many claims made for and against this technology, alongside many Initial Coin Offerings, it is understandable that regulators, investors, and other stakeholders find it difficult to assess its potential.”

“At this UN event, we aim to explore that potential by keeping public benefit at the center of our discussions.”

Promoting economic development in Africa

Helen Hai, representing the Blockchain Charity Foundation believes that the Blockchain for Sustainable Development event will provide a fantastic opportunity to network and collaborate on the public benefits of blockchain technology, while Bancor’s Galia Benartzi commented –

“We are excited to be able to share what we are doing to promote economic development in Africa via community currencies built on blockchain technology.”

There have been reports from organizers that presentations will also come from NGO and UN leaders who will share various views on the topic of sustainable development and the implications of blockchain technologies at the Blockchain for Sustainable Development event.

Stephen DeMeulenaere, an event organizer, believes “the interest in this topic is so high that we are anticipating heads of state in the room, with some presenting,” which gives a good idea of the importance of this event.
